Each year there are award ceremonies galore like the Academy Awards, Golden Globes, Cannes Film Festival, Tribeca Film Festival, plus many others. These ceremonies tout the best director, best actor, best animation, best short film, best of pretty much anything you can imagine. As the winners are announced, the library gets besieged by requests to purchase many of the films on DVD. I don't usually look at which film won what before I decide to see it or not. I go for what I enjoy. I also have the luxury of looking at all the new videos and DVDs the library gets in almost every day.
I am always surprised by what has been ordered and sometimes even more surprised by what I find already in the collection. You may encounter an old forgotten favorite, or perhaps a new top film to add to your list.
Also, this past year a Film Studies program was added to the college curriculum. With this came a deluge of new DVDs. Some of the new ones that have been ordered for Film Studies include: Cache, Crash, Manderlay, Virgin Suicides and Winter Soldier. These five are just a drop in the bucket.
You may have read about students' interest in developing a fee-based DVD Lending Library ("Pick Your Flick at Trexler Library," 3/22/2007), to be hosted by the library.
Library staff are investigating options to better meet students' needs, but in the meantime, did you know that the library has over 2,177 feature films along with documentaries, performing arts videos, foreign language films, whole series of popular TV shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The Sopranos, plus many others across the disciplines.
Access to the collection is free for all of the Muhlenberg community and each video or DVD can be kept for three days. If you have a long weekend and need more than one video, feel free to check out up to six audiovisual items at one time. Expand your blockbuster horizons!
Now let's see if you know what is in our collection! Have you heard of the following famous quotes before? Name the movies in which these well-known words were spoken. Cut out this section, fill in your answers, and drop them off at the Circulation Desk in the Library. One lucky student will win a gift certificate to a local movie theater!
1) "Yeah, they're dead. They're all messed up."
2) "Come on now! This is America. Time is money."
3) "He's off the map! He's off the map!"
4) "On second thought let's not go to Camelot. It's a silly place."
5) "Houston, we have a problem."
6) "As if!"
7) "They're called boobs, Ed."
8) "You betcha!"
9) "May the force be with you."
10) "I'll be back."
11) "My precious."
12) "A boy's best friend is his mother."
13) "Show me the money!"
14) "It's alive! It's alive!"
15) "Are you gonna bark all day little doggies, or are you gonna bite?"
One entry per student. Winner will be drawn from the entries with the most correct answers. Submit entries by Thurs., Apr. 26. Drawing will be held and winner will be notified by Mon., Apr. 30.
