Dear Editor:I found the Sports section in the April 16 edition of the Weekly to be severely lacking.
Under a banner that had the word SPORTS over the Mule logo, there was exactly one article on Muhlenberg varsity sports. There was a long article on intramurals, and the only other article in the section - by far the longest of the three - was on professional sports.
To me, it is completely inappropriate to take space away from Muhlenberg varsity athletes, who represent our College at schools throughout the region on a daily basis, and give it to a professional sport. This is supposed to be the Muhlenberg Weekly, not the National Hockey League Weekly.
The information on Muhlenberg sports is no less readily available on the Web than it is for professional sports; there is just less coverage, which only underscores the need for the staff of the campus newspaper to report on its fellow students.
And it's not like there's nothing to write about. In the week prior to this issue, an athlete on the Muhlenberg women's track and field team tied for the best pole vault in Division III this year, one from the men's team broke a school record, and the women's lacrosse team tied the school record for conference wins in a season. Additionally, the women's tennis team is on a winning streak, and the men's lacrosse team is in a dogfight for a playoff spot in the toughest conference in Division III.
Many years ago, I was the sports editor for a weekly newspaper at a college very similar to Muhlenberg. I understand the challenges, from not having enough writers, to having writers who don't turn in their assignments, to receiving articles that require so much editing that it is almost like starting from scratch. But despite the challenges, the position comes with a responsibility to manage content that is appropriate for a school newspaper, and I feel the Weekly did a poor job of this.
Sincerely,
Mike Falk
