Over the weekend the Mules hosted the Buttermaker Tournament. Their first game was held on Friday, in which the Mules played the College of Misericordia and won in three games (30-23, 30-18 and 30-21).

Junior Julie Lauro led the team with eleven kills and ten digs giving her a double-double.

Their second match was played against the Montclair State Red Hawks, and Sophomore Lauren Masem was the star of the game, serving twelve straight points including three aces.

Junior co-Captain Mary Henning also helped defeat the Red Hawks by providing 34 assists. The Mules won in three games (30-18, 30-16 and 32-30).

After winning the Pool A division, the Mules were placed in the Championship bracket and faced Kings College early Saturday morning.

After dropping the first set 30-26, the Mules showed signs of life, winning the second set, 30-18.

The Monarchs then came on strong to win the next sets 30-25, 30-25 to win the match 3-1. King’s College then lost to Florham, making a championship match of Muhlenberg vs. Florham.

This match was a suspenseful nail-biter from the beginning. Muhlenberg won the first set by a slim margin of 30-26 and won the second set by an even closer margin of 30-27.

With only one more set to win in order to clench the tournament championship, the third set consisted of many exciting long lasting volleys.

Although the Mules had the crowd on their feet, they eventually dropped the third set 30-27, followed by disappointing losses in the fourth and fifth sets.

Despite the loss, the Mules’ hard-hitting front line did very well. Lauro scored 26 kills while Sophomore Kate Haggerty had eleven and Sophomore Monica Sella, ten kills.

On defense, Junior Jen Weist and Freshman Megan Young contributed 28 and nineteen digs respectively.

Henning also had an incredible effort with 53 assists. She averaged an amazing 10.53 assists per game for the tournament.
