With all of the new renovations being made to many of the buildings on campus, Science majors will not be left out.
A new addition to the Shankweiler building will be built with groundbreaking after graduation this May.
Four architectural firms were interviewed on campus several weeks ago, and each brought models and pictures of their different ideas to the College.
The firm Ballinger, based in Philadelphia, was chosen last week for the project.
The firm was recently involved in creating the science facilities at Gettysburg College and Hope College in Michigan.
The Strategic Planning Committee begun by President Helm last fall, which ran throughout the year, went through various proposals from faculty and other groups to determine what upgrades are necessary at the College.
"The group had to prioritize and allocate funds, and the sciences came out toward the top," said Dr. Bruce Anderson, Associate Professor of Chemistry.
"Renovations to the Shankweiler building were seen as necessary since prospective students may be lost to other schools with newer facilities," stated Anderson.
Anderson acts as the lead faculty individual for the planning and construction of the new Shankweiler building and the renovations to be done to it.
The executive committee and the decision-making group for the project include Randy Helm, President of the College, Marjorie Hass, Provost of the College, Kent Dyer, Chief Business Officer and Treasurer, James Steffy, Planning Consultant and Dr. Richard Niesenbaum, Associate Professor of Biology.
There is also a divisional committee of faculty in which all departments are involved in the planning.
"The executive committee definitely wants input from faculty and students as to which architectural plan will be well-liked," said Anderson. "The executive committee makes the ultimate decision."
A planning consultant was brought in from Boston at the start of the project last year to discuss the growth that the science program might experience in the near future.
