Student Council member, Ryan Kipp '06 is planning to add Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) to the long and diverse list of student run clubs and organizations.
Kipp was a member SADD during his high school career and is now looking to continue his work with the organization on campus.
Kipp shared information about his close ties with the organization.
"During high school I unfortunately had friends who were in accidents and got hurt or even killed," he said.
Known for many years as Students Against Drunk Driving, the group has changed its name to better represent its redefined mission.
Kipp explained that the group now addresses a number of issues other than drunk driving, such as dealing with other destructive driving habits like road rage or driving while under the influence of any number of other drugs.
Kipp noted that the organization is finding a home on campus just in time, as concern with the numbers of alcohol related issues, such as the hospitalization of intoxicated students, has become increasingly worrisome.
"The best thing for this campus, especially at this point in time, is to start a focus group that can have a direct interest in these issues," explained Kipp.
"We're not here to try and control people's lives, but we need to let them know that we're dealing with a big issue. It's very important to be thinking about your actions before you carry them out," he stated.
Kipp further stated that the group will focus its attention on incoming first-year students as well as high school students who live in the surrounding community.
He noted that first-year students "are statistically having trouble with alcohol," due to the fact that most cases of substance abuse actually start during the high school years.
The presence of drugs and alcohol in such a young age group was the starting point for the founding of SADD. "People found that students were drinking and driving even in high school," Kipp explained.
