You could not ask for a better time for Muhlenberg (7-1) football’s last home game than Family Weekend. Loyality to the ’Berg brought the crowd to campus, but it was the team’s unrelenting fight and spunk that kept every seat filled.
Although the weather was damp and dreary, the fans proved their usual undying support as they cheered the Mules to an amazing 21-0 sweep over the Gettysburg Bullets (1-7).
Just as the Mules destroyed the Bullets, Franklin and Marshall killed McDaniel College Green Terror, the Mules’ main opposition for first place this game. This has placed ’Berg a half game ahead of McDaniel and in first place.
It took the Mules a few minutes to get some points on the board, but with 11:34 on the clock, Sophomore Matt Johnson scored his first career touchdown on a two yard run.
With three minutes to go in the first quarter, two holding penalties and an incomplete pass put the Mules on their own six yard line.
Rosetti, who avoided three very close sacks, managed to get off a cross pattern pass to Freshman receiver Michael Karchner. The pass was fumbled and recovered by the Bullets for a first and goal position. But a spectacular performance by the Mules’ defense forced the Bullets in to a missed twenty yard field goal attempt.
After two great defensive stops, holding the Bullets to two missed field goals, Muhlenberg took their spot on the third yard line and marched patiently toward the endzone, maintaining possession and running the clock.
Three consecutive runs by Johnson produced two first downs and a sixteen yard rush touchdown, putting the Mules up by fourteen after Grube’s extra point.
A big run to the Muhlenberg 34 yard line gave the Bullets a first down and some momentum for a comeback just before the close of the first half.
The back was taken down, however, by Junior Mike McCurley. The next play saw a long pass sent close to the endzone, which was picked off by Junior Phil Gasker and returned 31 yards.
