Another semester in the 'Berg Bubble

Jason Klein

Issue date: 1/27/05 Section: Op/Ed
The beginning of a new semester is my absolute favorite time of year in the 'Berg Bubble. My favorite thing to do during the first week is to quietly observe the hordes of students around campus and watch the excited sparkle slowly fade from their eyes. Of course, it's not that I root for people to be walking around campus with no purpose other than to pass their classes so they can get wasted on the days of the week that end with the letter "y".

However, during the first weeks of a new semester, the majority of the Student Body bounces around campus like a sugar fed four year old in a funhouse at Disneyland.

One reason for this is that students spend at least a portion of their break making comparisons with their friends from home like who gained more weight or who got the lowest grades. This is why the beginning of each semester is the busiest time for the Life Sports Center and why the salads at General's Quarters (GQ) are sold faster than a bagel bomb moves through a digestive tract. Motivation based on envy makes every student come back wanting to excel and determined not to repeat the mistakes they have made in semesters past.

It is nearly impossible to walk into Seegers during average meal hours. The entranceways are packed and the lines for GQ and the Garden Room (GR) are longer than the list of lies told by convicted murderer Scott Peterson.

Apparently every student is convinced that they will be able to use up all of the meals on their pricey "Gold Plus" meal plan.

That is why GQ and the GR are packed for the first week of a new semester: the students are anxious to use up their swipes as quickly as possible instead of drawing out the atrocity of dining on such fine mass produced meals.

However, after the first week of the GR's fine cuisine, the students run not just to the bathrooms, but to the phones to call Domino's Pizza.

The next time there will be a line in Seegers is the last week of the semester when the Student Body tries to swipe cases of water as a last ditch effort to use up their swipes.
