The Mules fell short when they faced Johns Hopkins University, the third ranked team in the Centennial Conference.
The first time the two teams met this season, the Mules lost to the Blue Jays 91-64. This time, however, the Mules improved their losing deficit to a mere eight points.
The Mules switched from their usual style of play, which is similar to ice hockey rotations, to a more common approach. Their technique adjustment resulted in a decrease in points scored as the team averaged 83.3 points per game going into the game against Johns Hopkins University.
Although the College scored 30.3 points less than its average, the losing margin was significantly lower than the last game versus the Blue Jays.
Johns Hopkins came out strong with an 8-0 run, but Junior Stephanie Coluccini broke up the Blue Jay scoring streak with back-to-back jumpers. The jumpers sparked the Mules' 9-2 offensive run that positioned the team 10-9 with 11:39 on the clock.
Sophomore Emily Wright tied the game at sixteen points with 7:28 remaining in play.
Wright then pushed the team ahead for the first time in the game with a jumper at 6:52, making the score 18-16. The Blue Jays battled back, and the two teams entered the locker room with the score reading, 26-21 in favor of the Jays.
In the second half, Senior Gwen Doyle and Wright came out strong, hitting deep three-point shots. Junior Lacie Smith then scored to give the College their second lead of the game at 29-28.
Johns Hopkins Sophomore Whitney Davis then came off the bench with a three-pointer for the Jays to regain their lead. They stayed ahead for the remainder of the game.
Wright and Junior Kristen Piscaldo led the College with twelve and ten points respectively. Last week, Piscaldo was recognized on the Centennial Conference Honor Roll for her performance against Swarthmore College last week. Piscaldo had seventeen points, six assists and four steals in the game.
Smith led both teams with fifteen rebounds as the Mules finished just one board behind Hopkins, 47-46.
Tonight, the Mules face Washington College (M.D.), who is ranked ninth in the Conference. On Saturday, the Mules will go up against Gettysburg College. Gettysburg is fifth in the Conference.
