"When you're alone
And life is making you lonely - You can always go downtown…"
You know, readers, Petula Clark has a good point there. If you are tired of the College bar and party scene, and are looking for some fun and new excitement in your life you can always go…downtown! And no, I don't mean on someone-I mean head on down to Tenth Street right here in own beloved city of Allentown. Nestled in between the coffee shops and abandoned buildings is a magical place-one that few have ever heard of or seen.
I am speaking of the infamous Stonewall Bar. Stonewall is a Gay/Lesbian/Pretty Much Anything You Can Think Of bar. I ventured down to Tenth Street with some girlfriends of mine this past Thursday night. Some of us were straight, some were gay, and maybe, just maybe, for that night the rest of us were somewhere delightfully in-between.
Ladies, if you are tired of the relentless lack of decent man-candy on this campus, of being drooled on by drunken horny men with hairy knuckles or if you have or are considering giving up on male testosterone altogether because it has just not been working out for you, a trip to the Stonewall might just be what you need.
For a straight woman, it is quite the adjustment. For a woman who is used to getting hit on constantly at bars and clubs, it will be a major shock when you walk in and no one looks at you. "But Lily, if it is a gay bar, won't the women hit on me?" Just like heterosexual people are not attracted to every single member of the opposite sex, it is the same in the gay and lesbian community. Just because you are a woman doesn't mean all gay women will hit on you, ask you to dance or even look at you. Just because you are a straight guy in a gay bar doesn't automatically change your romantic preferences in those first few minutes.
Anyway, straight people are drenched in heterosexuality from the moment they step inside the bar. When I got out to bars/clubs/parties, I like to dress up. I like to put on a hot outfit, make sure my ass looks fine and apply my makeup. At Stonewall, most of the women are dressed in baggy pants and shirts, sweatshirts and bandanas. A girl wearing a shirt with her boobs about to pop out will stick out in the crowd like a sore thumb. A simple tight tee shirt, tank top or button-down shirt with jeans and causal sneakers or boots will do just fine if you are trying to blend in.
