Men's Basketball split against Ursinus and Washington

Issue date: 1/25/07 Section: Sports
Last year in a must-win game to make the playoffs, the Mules upset the number one team in the conference: the Ursinus Bears. The reigning Centennial Conference champs returned to Allentown looking for revenge, and they started out fierce and fast. However, after the early storm Muhlenberg got right back in the game and would take a 23-22 lead with 6:51 left. The Mules fell apart from that point on.
After going down, Ursinus went 21-0 to finish the half and would start the second half with eight more unanswered points. The Bears would finish the game up 40 points, 89-49, reminiscent of some of last years' scores at home. This time they were on the wrong side of the scoreboard. Sophomore Mike Bernardini led the Mules with 15 points.
After losing to Ursinus and dropping below five hundred in the conference, the Mules traveled to Washington. After last year's playoff loss in Chestertown, the Mules were ready for revenge. The first half was controlled by Washington, but Muhlenberg came out strong in the second half.
A key move to switch to a 2-3 zone in the beginning of the second half got the Mules back into the game and they even took leads at 54-53 and 65-62. However, Washington toughened up and went on a 9-2 run to close out the game and took the victory 71-65. Senior Justin Fields led the Mules in scoring with 16 points. The Mules need to turn things around fast if they hope to make the Centennial Conference playoffs for the second year in a row.
