To the Editor:
I am writing in response to Emily Schweighardt's letter to the editor from Jan. 25 on not being permitted to fax her resume from the Career Center for an internship. The Career Center is a student-centered office; I can sympathize with her frustration and agree that faxing should be available to students. Once I learned Emily's name from her letter, I contacted her and we had a pleasant conversation during which I apologized to her for the inconvenience.
Since I became Career Center Director last spring, we have updated many procedures and policies to make our services more user-friendly. The former fax policy was put into place when faxing was common, and could have resulted in a major backlog at the fax machine. This led to a practice of only faxing for students who were working with the office. A new fax policy was something we had not fully addressed yet, as a request to fax materials rarely comes up. After the incident occurred, I discussed the matter with the Directors of the departments with whom we share the copier/printer/fax machine and a change in policy was already in progress when the letter was published. We are happy to review and fax career-related items for students such as resumes, job applications and graduate school materials.
Your Career Center is here to serve, support and educate you--all students, all class years, all majors, all career fields and on all career plans. You are welcome to see us to use any of our services and you are certainly welcome to ask us to fax your job, internship or graduate school information.
