Most students at the College have either watched parts of President Bush's State of the Union Address or discussed it in class and among friends. However, as young adults and the future generation of this country, many of us may not be aware of the importance of our observations and opinions on our President's speech. In fact, they are of such significance that NBC recently made the effort to come all the way to the College to interview students on their perspectives.

Jimmie Riggins '07 was chosen to voice his opinion on the matter and was interviewed in the Hoffman House. To NBC Nightly News, Riggins said that although he does not approve of the war in Iraq, he believes that at this point removing our troops would just lead to more chaos because of Iraq's lack of security.

When asked how he felt about being on the news Riggins said that "I was nervous at first but I kept my cool and went along with it." Despite the pressure of being on the news for everyone to scrutinize, Riggins remained calm and articulate, impressing his friends and family. "I had a basketball game that day and when I came back I saw some of my friends and they told me that they had seen me on TV. I did not expect people to notice me on the news but later more of my friends called me up to tell me they had seen me and what they thought of it," said Riggins.

Riggins was recommended by Professor Borick, Professor of Political Science. Riggins enjoyed the interview and said that "it was a good first time experience of doing an interview that would be put on television…I'm just glad that it wasn't a live broadcast."

Regardless of whether the broadcast was live, Riggins did an excellent job of representing the College's students. Political involvement is an essential part of a college community and it has the potential to greatly affect our future. Jimmie Riggins is just one example of how young people have a voice, whether it be in political clubs on campus, voting in the next election or on NBC Nightly News.
