To the Editor:
As a member of Student Council myself, I was very offended by the letter to the editor written by David Dolan in the Feb. 1 issue regarding Student Council and responsibility. I feel, however, that the letter failed to recognize the full picture of what Student Council actually does. As a member of Council who has been elected three consecutive times to serve the Student Body, I would like to clear up some misconceptions and offer some suggestions to those who may feel frustrated with our organization.
First, I think it is unfair to criticize the various activities and events that Class Councils have put together for fundraising and class unification. These members have spent countless hours planning events meant to bond their classes and enhance the college experience. These include events such as formals, pub nights, Mr. Muhlenbergs, barbecues and hot chocolate nights. In addition, what about Student Council's "Henry Awards"? What other events at Muhlenberg have you seen with a large and diverse group of students in attendance that has served as a morale booster for the entire College Community? Many students enjoy these events and do not realize that Class Representatives and Class Council members volunteer their time and hard work to plan and carry out these events.
While Class Representatives have worked very hard on various fundraising and unifying initiatives, they have also worked hard on various resolutions addressing student concerns. We have passed resolutions regarding the recent Hookah Policy that the Administration put into place, and another resolution regarding a safe walkway from Prosser Hall to Chew Street, which is now on the College's Special Projects list.
My advice to anyone who wants changes to occur is to be proactive and become involved. Student Council members are students just like all of you and we cannot read people's minds. If you have concerns, I urge you to contact one of your Class Representatives directly, and then it is their job to bring that concern to Student Council. Contact information for Representatives and Class Council members can be found on the Student Council Board located across from the Book Store in the lower level of Seegers.
