If you have tried to walk through Seegers and General's Quarters between 12:00-1:00 p.m. recently, you might have noticed the ridiculous lines and stifling congestion overrunning the joint. Let's call this Muhlenberg's own little "rush hour"-a time of the day when actually ordering a sandwich rather than grabbing one off the pre-made food shelf seems unthinkable. The problem of noon-time craziness has been an overwhelming problem this entire year and it has finally received the attention it deserves.
Kim Nguyen '07 presented a video on behalf of the Student Body during the Board of Trustees meeting, visually demonstrating the influx of students during this especially hectic period of the day. "On Tuesdays and Thursdays 53 classes let out between 12:00 and 12:30," stated Nguyen. This stat is a cry for immediate damage control and luckily, Sodexho stepped up to the plate and turned The Red Door into an additional lunchtime alternative. Years ago, The Red Door served as a bowling alley and then a café of sorts. And though the time for a rebirth of lanes, pins and velcro shoes may have passed, we feel like we are not alone in saying, we are glad to see its cuisine roots resurrected.
This new haven for food and health lovers campus-wide offers wraps, salads, Tex-Mex style concoctions and soup, many containing organic ingredients. Its hours of operation are between 12:00 and 2:00 and many hope that it will diffuse some of the foot traffic cramping the upper level of Seegers and (especially) General's Quarters' square footage. Best of all, the new shindig operates on swipe. Halleluiah!
Dining renovations were supposed to be completed before the Life Sports Center and phase I of the Seegers renovation. And although it seems that dining facilities upkeep continually gets pushed off, the new Red Door offers a quick and easy solution (for now) for muchie maddness. Props to the administration for speedily (or so it seems) implementing something that serves so many of the students' wants and needs. From seniors worn out by greasy fries and looking for healthier options, to others in need of quick sustenance and a pick-me-up, we are impressed and grateful for The Red Door's new groove.
