V-Day is a global campaign that is geared towards ending violence against girls and women. The main goals of this campaign are to increase awareness of violence against women, as well as to raise money. The types of violence may include rape, battery, incest and female genital mutilation. In 2006, there were over 2,700 V-Day benefit events taking place in the United States and around the world. V-Day is a non-profit corporation that is growing in 81 countries from Europe to Asia, Africa and the Caribbean, and all of North America. Funds are distributed to other organizations that aim to stop violence against girls and women.

The College held a V-Day Campaign from Sun., Feb. 11 through Sun., Feb.18. This has taken place at the College in previous years and has been very successful. "It is a monumental movement that is taking campuses across the country by storm," said John Jannuzzi '07, Coordinator of the V-Day campaign.

This year, the spotlight was on "women in war zones." On Feb. 11, the V-Day campaign started off with the event "Stop Studying and Stop Violence." This event, co-sponsored by the Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA), featured movies in the Red Door Cafe. On Feb. 13, a talent show for women, "Louder, Faster, Deeper" took place. On Feb. 15, "Reclaiming Muhlenberg," which broke down gender and sexual boundaries in academia, took place in the Center for the Arts Recital Hall. At the end of the week, there were three performances of "Vagina Monologues," produced by Desiree Sedehi '08. The purpose of the monologues is to celebrate female sexuality and to fight against violence towards girls and women.

Karen Green, Dean of Students and Vice President of Student Affairs, made her College theatre debut when she participated in the Saturday night performance. "Pussy power" t-shirts and "pussy pops" were sold in Seegers Union for the duration of the week. A panel of women also spoke at the College. Ten percent of the money raised was donated to the international V-Day campaign and the other 90 percent was donated to Lehigh Valley Turning Point.

Abby Mayerhoff '08, V-Day Coordinator and liaison between the international campaign and the College campaign said, "We were beyond appreciative of the support we received on campus."
