About 500 students came out to vote last year. This year, however, more than 700 students voted for the new President, chosing between Gordon and Matt Fash '09. Dave Dolan '07 was removed from the list after he conceeded late last week. Gordon received more than 65 percent of the votes cast.
Ryan Campbell, former Student Body President, sat at the election table throughout the day, along with other members of Student Council, encouraging students who walked through Seegers to vote. Campbell said he was happy with the larger voter turnout than last year. He hopes it's a sign that more students are getting involved. He would love to see "more involvment in the future especially in the Student Body President debate next year."
At around 6:00 p.m. Gordon found out he had been elected and was "thrilled and honored." Gordon said, "I am excited and eagerly await the opportunity to use the knowledge that I have attained during my previous three years on Council as the President of the Class of 2008."
Other than serving as President of his class, Gordon is a Tour Guide, Student Advisor, Campus Delegate and a member of the Cardinal Key Society.
Gordon said that current Student Body President "Ryan Campbell has done an excellent job during his term. Everyone has their own distinct way of doing things. There is a great foundation; however, I am looking forward to implementing my own style and new ways of accomplishing all of our goals."
As Gordon expressed in his platform, one of his principle goals is to unite the Student Body. He hopes that giving the Student Body a loud voice will help in this unification. He expects that, as always, there will be conflicting opinions on both sides but believes it is "essential for us to look at the common thread we all share and agree upon, and move forward from there."
Gordon describes himself as "dedicated, open-minded and sincere." All qualities that will enable him to serve the members of the College. He said, "I am extremely open to suggestions from the Student Body and am looking forward to working my best to address concerns and tackle the issues that are important to the students." Other than politics, Gordon also wanted to express that he enjoys taking long walks on the beach.
