This past Saturday evening, exotic music sounded throughout the GQ as students and a belly dancer moved to the beat and tasty Middle Eastern food was consumed.

March 31 was the second Middle Eastern extravaganza held this semester at the GQ. Lots of work went into last weekend's festival. In fact, "It took about 60 hours, [throughout] the whole week, to prepare all the food," said Sheyam, late night GQ manager.

The menu included homemade falafel, chicken shwarma, grape leaves and Middle Eastern pudding amongst a wide assortment of other ethnic foods.

With great enthusiasm, Sheyam announced to those in the GQ, "We see you when you are drunk, when you are eating chicken fingers and fries [and] when you are here late at night and hungry. We see you, and know your lives. Now, we want you to get to know our lives too."

Overall, it was a fantastic evening that gave the College a taste of another culture through music, dance and cuisine. We are, however, asking that the College strengthen their support for the GQ staff by allowing them to have similar programming more frequently. As a college community, we should increase our understanding of other cultures. Currently, on campus we can experience, firsthand, Middle Eastern culture from many of the Sodexo workers.

It is time that the administration and students at Muhlenberg realize that the GQ staff are more than our food servers. If we let them, they can be our teachers also.
