Track Teams turn in strong performances

The Men's Team also performed well in their debut meet of the spring season. Freshman Jeremiah Lachaud and sophomore Evan Sheppard both provided the Mules with first place finishes in the 200 meters and the discus respectively. Lachaud ran the 200 meters in 22.69 seconds, while Sheppard threw a distance of 143-4 in the discus, which not only clenched first place but also qualified him for the ECACs. Also turning in ECAC qualifying performances were senior Tim Seeley in the 5000 meters and the 4x100 relay team of freshman Steve Liapis, junior Dan Steinhart, freshman Eric Miller and Lachaud.
This past weekend, on Sat., March 31, the Mules hosted the Muhlenberg Invitational. The Women's Team received a stunning eight first-place finishes. Claiming the top spot in their events were Drosdick in the 100 meter hurdles and high jump, Mitchell in the Javelin, freshman Janelle Mentrikoski in the 400 meter hurdles, senior Jacquelyn Inverso in the triple jump, freshman Debra Crockett in the shot put, freshman Alex Faust in the pole vault and the 4x400 relay team of freshman Lauren Conicella, sophomore Kathryn Niedzwiecki, Karel and Martini. Among these first-place finishes were ECAC qualifying performances by Drosdick and Faust. Faust's pole vault of 10-10 also set a new school record. In addition, Mitchell's throw of 131-10 in the javelin provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Championships.
The Men's Team also achieved a great deal of success on Saturday, with several first place finishes and ECAC qualifying performances. Senior Matt Sallese claimed first place in the shot-put, while both the 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams also finished first. The 4x400 team of Steinhart, Miller, freshman Bill Ryan and sophomore Dan Goldstein finished in 3:29.36, and the 4x800 team of sophomores Greg Ceponis and Stuart Udis, senior Steve Rothwell and freshman Pat Thornton ran a time of 8:13.88. Excelling individually for the Mules were sophomores Udis and David Chorney, both qualifying for the ECACs. Udis ran a strong 800 meters, finishing second in 1:55.85, while Chorney finished the 5000 meters in fifth place with a time of 15:26.72. Also qualifying for the ECACs was the 4x100 relay team of Brendan Kirk '10, Steinhart, Miller and Lachaud. Based on the results of these past two meets, the outdoor season looks to be promising for both the Men's and the Women's Teams. Both teams return to action on Sat., April 7 at Princeton for the Sam Howell Invitational.
