Issue date: 4/19/07 Section: News
Greek Week, a week of competitions among the different Greek organizations at the College, took place Tues., Apr. 10 through Sun., Apr. 15. Four fraternities and four sororities competed against each other in events such as tug of war, lip sync, flag football, volleyball, swimming, dodge ball and an obstacle course. Also included in the fraternity competitions was a halo video game tournament and ulimate frisbee.

Chris Jachimowicz, Director of Student Leadership Development and Greek Affairs, said, "It's [Greek Week] pretty prevalent. Almost all campuses have Greek Week." The week of events, although competitive, is really an opportunity for members of the Greek Community to come together and showcase their sportsmanship. It's the only time of year for all Greek organizations to hang out under one roof. Because fraternities and sororities on campus dedicate so much time and effort into pursuing philanthropic and fundraising events, for the lip sync competition, donations were collected at the door. The donations went to an autism charity.

Members of each organization look forward to this event every year. For most participants, it was their first time being able to compete in the weeks worth of events. Last year, Greek Week was cancelled for the sororities as many of the chapters were having unresolved issues with their Nationals. This year, however, the chapters proved themselves worthy to continue the tradition. Corinne Julius '08 said, "Greek life does a lot for Muhlenberg's campus every year." Each chapter does a lot of community service and supports a lot of the other groups on campus by donating money to them or participating in their philanthropic events. In the fall of this year, the Greek organizations all bought tickets to attend Dance for a Cure. Greek chapters also volunteer around the Lehigh Valley area at the Phoebe Home, Jefferson Elementary, Pinebrook and the Sixth Street Shelter. Delta Zeta held their annual DZ Hop to raise money for those with hearing-related problems. Phi Sigma Sigma held their annual Rock-A-Thon, raising over $1,500 for the National Kidney Foundation. Alpha Chi Omega took a bold and successful step in hosting a fashion show which raised money to help fight domestic violence. Money is raised for the Children's Miracle Network by Phi Mu. Even the fraternities have worked hard to raise money. Sigma Phi Epsilon worked with the Community Service Office to sponsor two blood drives and will also take part in Mental Health Awareness week. Delta Tau Delta held a concert in the Garden Room benefiting the Jolie Foundation just this past weekend. The brothers of Phi Kappa Tau raised money for a camp for terminally ill children and AEPi had a golf outing a few months ago to raise money for the Camelot House. All Greek organizations have participated in the Greek Community Clean-up.
