On Sat., Apr. 14, Empie Theatre was transformed for the 9th Annual Henry Awards, a ceremony named after Henry Melchior Muhlenberg, for whom the College was named. The celebration included awards for Best Male and Female Athletes, Rookie of the Year and Helping Hand, to name a few. There was a pre-award reception and a dessert reception after the show.
Voting for the nominees and award winners was conducted earlier in the semester. The first round of nominations was open to the entire Student Body via the Internet. Then, the Selection Committee, comprised of students, faculty and staff, chose the top three nominees in each category and voted for the winner. There were three People's Choice Awards, and three nominees were selected by the Committee and then the campus voted for the winner.
Hosts Matthew Grimaldi '08 and David Wrigley '08 gave hilarious introductions for the presenters and entertainment, the first one being for the campus comedy group "Fun with Eggs." Their sketch opened the night on a note of uproarious laughter, telling the story of Henry Melchior Muhlenberg's trip to America and his place here at the College.
The campus a capella groups, The Girls Next Door, Acafellas, InAcchord, ChaiMonics, Noteworthy and the Muhlenberg Dynamics provided entertainment for the ceremony between awards presentations. These groups performed a variety of popular songs, ranging from the Broadway tune "Little Shop of Horrors" to Gwen Stefani's "Sweet Escape." The dance groups Soul Sound Steppers, Perkulators, Copasetic Rhythms and Mint* also gave performances, receiving much applause throughout the evening.
The Class Council of 2009 was mainly responsible for planning and executing the event, but many others assisted them. Erica Lang '09, one of the event chairs along with Katie Bemis '09, said, "I'm grateful to everyone who helped to make this night a success. A special thanks goes to John Gavin, John Evans, Melissa Buffaloe and Matt Franzetti for helping us with lighting, sound and stage management, which Katie and I weren't too familiar with."
