Who would have thought that in the middle of April, there would be temperatures barely in the 40s? But the seniors on the Softball Team wouldn't let the weather take away from their Senior Day. The four ladies were honored with flowers and gifts but then made their day even more special by picking up two Conference wins. Senior Nicole Washburn pitched a great first game with a five-hit shutout, her seventh of her career and struck out seven batters. Sophomores Sam Crist and RiRi Ferrigno batted in the two runs of the game, and the Mules won 2-0. Washburn stated, "These games were very important. We needed a sweep, not only for our confidence but also to help our chances of making the Conference playoffs."
During the second game, the bats caught fire as the Mules exploded for season highs of 13 runs and 18 hits. Senior Hilary Marinchak had three hits including a triple and scored three runs. Senior Tina Roth went 3-for-4 with three RBI's. The team also got some help from the underclassman as freshmen Jenna Van Waalwijk, Allie Saltstein and Katie Smithson went 7-for-12 on the day and batted in five runs. Sophmore Lara Kestenbaum picked up her third win of the season. "This game was really special," said Washburn of Senior Day. "If I had to play my last year of softball, I'm glad it's with this group of girls."
The Mules are sitting pretty in the Centennial Conference with a Conference record of 5-3 and 8-14 record overall. They have a big weekend planned ahead with a double-header scheduled for Apr. 19 against Dickinson who has a Conference record of 2-4 and a 9-10 overall record. The team will travel to McDaniel who has posted a 4-4 Conference record and are 12-14 overall on Saturday for another double-header.
