On. Wed., Oct. 10, the Women's Soccer Team took on a tough opponent in Swarthmore. The Mules were able to take the lead on a goal from freshman Valerie Patriarca, who converted on a penalty kick at the 58:21 mark. Unfortunately, it would be the only Mule goal in the game, as Swarthmore's stifling defensive play that has served them well all season would allow no more goals. Swarthmore was able to tie up the score on a header that went just past sophomore goalie Kate Morrissey. So into overtime it went. With 4:24 left to play in the first overtime, Swarthmore scored off a deflected shot after a corner kick, taking the victory by a score of 2-1.
A few days later on Sat., Oct. 13, the Mules looked to put their loss behind them and tackle Johns Hopkins. Sophomore Kasey Hacker and her twin sister Kimberly teamed up for the first goal of the game, with Kasey recording the goal and Kimberly the assist. Their lead held for most of the game, but the Blue Jays came back, scoring three goals in just 15 minutes. They took the momentum and the game, 3-1.
Looking to snap their two-game losing streak, the Women's Team traveled to Bryn Mawr on Oct. 17, and this time they would win in decisive fashion. The game remained scoreless until Patriarca, no doubt the star of this match, found the back of the net 30:41 into the game. But she wasn't done. Just 43 seconds later, she pounded in another off a pass from sophomore Christina O'Grady. Finally, 48 seconds after her second goal, Patriarca topped off the hat trick with a header into the net, assisted by sophomore Jayne Condon.
Patriarca wasn't the only Mule to record a goal in the scoring frenzy. Freshman Rachael Goldstein scored to give the Mules a 4-0 lead. Later, Kasey Hacker along with freshmen Diana Ortiz and Christine Van Hise rounded off the scoring, and finished off Bryn Mawr by a score of 7-0. Their seven goals are tied for the third highest in team history.
Fresh off their impressive win, the Mules looked to finish off Franklin & Marshall on Oct. 20. While the Mules outshot their opponents 15-7, they lost a heartbreaking game, 1-0, as Franklin & Marshall scored with 22:01 left in the second half. Now 7-5-3, 4-3-1, the Mules have dropped to seventh place in the Centennial Conference.
The Men's Team has also been busy these past couple of weeks, as they faced McDaniel on Oct. 13. They outshot the Green Terror badly, but were unable to score until senior Jonathan Kliewer put them on the board with 6:16 remaining in the game. The defensive play of both teams was tough, as sophomore Samuel Hayden saved a would-be goal for the Green Terror to keep his Mules locked in a scoreless battle. Kliewer's goal proved to be the difference, as the Mules shut out McDaniel 1-0.
