We're going to start this article with a little story.
Mad River. In my opinion, one of the best bars in Philly. Dancing downstairs, lounge upstairs, right off Penn's Landing and all in all a guaranteed good time. I was there about a month ago when I met a guy and some harmless flirting pursued.
Harmless flirting quickly turned into suggestive flirting, which even more quickly turned into things getting a little touchy. It was at this point that my friend pulled me aside and whispered something in my ear.
"Lex, he has a girlfriend."
Apparently, one of his friends had let my friend in on that little secret.
I turned back to the guy, Ryan was his name, and smiled.
"Do you have a girlfriend?"
His face fell before he recovered with a guilty smile.
"Yeah, I do."
"K bye!" I grabbed my drink and my friend and I walked away.
The following Monday I was at work exchanging weekend stories.
"…so it turns out that this guy was totally 'flirt cheating' on his girlfriend," I told them, conjuring up a term that best seemed to fit the situation.
The ladies in the office seemed intrigued by this new phrase and the weekend conversation quickly turned into one about the ups and downs of "flirt cheating."
"Flirt cheating" is strictly a don't ask-don't tell situation. First, let us clarify that flirt cheating is neither sexual, emotional or physical. It is strictly the act of letting off some flirting steam when you're not with your significant other.
Sometimes when you're out alone with your buddies or girl friends, you just need to know if you still got it. Enter flirt cheating. This is not to say that when in a relationship, you should allow your flirting to cross any lines.
Remember that while you're out harmlessly batting your eyelashes, your boyfriend could very possibly be a few bars over getting eyelashes batted at him.
There is a risk of a double standard occurring because when you and your significant other are out together you should be confident that you only have eyes for each other and should never let them wander as you would when you were "flirt-cheating." Just realize that while you're out alone and allowing yourself to flirt cheat, your boyfriend or girlfriend has every right to do the same.
