In order to be eligible to compete in the tournament, each runner had to qualify in their respective NCAA regions as an individual. In total, 56 individuals were chosen, composing of the top seven athletes in each region who are not part of a qualifying team.
Chorney knew that he had qualified after his performance in the NCAA Mideast Regional last week, which was hosted by Muhlenberg at Lehigh University, where he placed 14th overall. His teammates Van Syckle and Gearin found out about their bids when NCAA announced their at-large selections.
Van Syckle and Chorney are the first cross country runners in school history to make it to the NCAA Tournament twice, as they competed last season. This is the first time that Muhlenberg has had both genders represent the school in the same year.
The Men's race will begin on Saturday, Nov. 17 in Minnesota at 11 a.m central time, and the Women's race will begin at 12 p.m. central time.
