The power of the new generation
Muhlenberg Weekly Executive Board
Issue date: 1/24/08 Section: Op/Ed
"You're never ready for this; you simply hit the ground running and never stop." That is what our editor in chief told us right after we had obtained our new, higher positions. With all this weight on our shoulders now, we are quite nervous about carrying out our positions to the best of our ability, to upholding the journalistic standard that so preceedes us, but we realized halfway through our first meeting and our "what do we do now?" looks to one another, that this can only be a good thing. To be in a position where we can influence some type of change, however small, leaves the door open for many different possibilities.
We may have power, but so does every well-educated college student out there today. By using the tools and resources given to us, as well as the passion for change we know most of us harbor, the differences that we could make in society are endless. We are truly the new generation, in that we have experienced war and hatred in their most radical senses and we know that such horrible things, like that of the Jena Six, should die with us.
We firmly believe that if every college student, or even every person, invested some time and energy into a cause they are passionate about then something, anything would start to happen. If we all adopted the attitude of simply diving in and never giving up, that relentlessness would prevail. It would have to.
There is no better time than the present to become involved somehow - to join that club you have always had your eye on, to protest that issue you find unjust, or to vote for your favorite candidate. With a new semester just beginning, the time for change is now…
And as we sit here writing this amidst the production of our first issue as leaders of this paper, we have to wonder what lies ahead for us. What changes will we make? What changes will we witness? Maybe we will have the chance to record in these pages the changes that take place this year from all of those who decide to follow our lead.
So, with that we ask you, who's ready to run?
