It's a new year and a new season for the Muhlenberg Track and Field Team. On Sat., Jan. 12, the Mules competed at the Franklin & Marshall Coach "I" Invitational to open their season. Taking on only two other teams, Franklin & Marshall and Albright, the Mules had a promising start to the 2008 season, with sophomore Alex Faust in the spotlight as she qualified for the NCAAs.

Last season, Faust set the school record in the pole vault, only to shatter it already this season with a height of 11-7. Faust found similar success in the 55 meters, the 200 meters, and as a part of the 4X400 relay team. Other first-place finishers were freshman Kim Bier and sophomores Jeremiah Lachaud and Brendan Kirk. Kirk won the 55 hurdles with a time of 8:51.

The Mules rested up for a week, gearing up for the Collegeville Classic on Fri., Jan. 18. The Women finished sixth, and the Men finished eleventh out of 14 total teams. Freshman Hanna Mitchell came in second in the 800 meters with a time of 2:28.63, earning her a spot on the all-time performance list. Sophomore Lauren Conicella placed fourth in the 800 meters. Bier ran the mile in 5:35.16, placing her eighth on the performance list. In the high jump, senior Erika Koop placed fourth, and sophomore Debra Crockett also placed fourth in the shot put.

As for the Men's Team, junior Timothy Van Syckle finished the mile in 4:29.98. Sophomore Patrick Thornton crossed the finish line right behind him with a time of 4:33.28. Senior Adam Carter placed fourth in the high jump, and junior Evan Sheppard had a strong showing in the shot put.

Next up for the Mules is the Muhlenberg Invitational this Fri., Jan. 25.
