The College's Wrestling Team got back to practice on New Year's Day. They wrestled two tournaments and two other matches before classes even began. It is clear that the team's hard work is paying off. This Wed.the College played host to a meet with Scranton. The matches started out strong with pins in the lowest weight classes by junior Dan McEnroy(125 lbs.) and freshman Michael Slevin (133 lbs.). Junior Billy Hall won a close match (4-3) at 141 lbs.
Junior Rob Kein, ranked 7th in Division III, pinned his opponent in just over a minute. The 174 pounder and junior Justin Fitch won by major decision (11-3). The meet ended strong with another three wins. Junior Matt Horn (184 lbs.) pinned his opponent in 1:08. Next, a big win came from freshman Bill Sholly by tech fall. To close the team's strong performance, senior heavyweight Joe Tartar won with a pin.
"Coming off a strong win against Scranton gave the team confidence for Saturday's matches," said senior Co-Captain David Lavin. The team did carry momentum into their meet against Gettysburg. At 165 lbs. he, like Kein, went 2-0 against Gettysburg and Johns Hopkins on Sat. Senior Co-Captain Joe DeCampo (141 lbs) won by major decision against Gettysburg. Kein beat another nationally ranked wrestler with a 6-4 decision. Fitch and Horn both pinned opponents leading the team to a 37-12 victory over Gettysburg.
The team's streak of confidence ended with the meet against host Johns Hopkins. But it was not without some highlights. Hall won by major decision (9-1). Kein, Lavin, and Tartar all won by decision. Clearly the extra practice is paying off and the work in the wrestling room is showing in competition. "I'm motivated to be a better person on and off the mat," stated Horn.
