Call their sound adventure-pop. It's a unique sound that really could not fit in any other category. That was the beat of Friday night in the Red Door as "TV Babysittters" revealed their energetic affair to the Muhlenberg music scene at the debut showing.
With Jordan Miller '10 on drums, Justin Mayfield '10 on bass, Mike Kurtz '10 on keyboard and Matt Katz '10 on saxophone, these are just some of their instruments this band uses to captivate the audience.
All four have had a long history with music in a variety of elements-and are not new to the Red Door performances.
Miller is involved with four bands on campus (we are not touching how many bands outside of school). "Matt Katz rocks out on stage," says sophomore Danielle Stern, as well as with three bands at school and one at home.
Justin is occupied with two bands from home along with the TV Babysitters. Kurtz writes and performs his own original piano pieces.
Each member brought something different to this collateral exhibition. On piano, Kurtz wrote the bare bones for the music that is eventually fleshed out into what is heard onstage.
"It's a mix of horror movies, sci-fi, TV commercials, and grindhouse theatre," says Miller. It certainly kept the audience entertained on Friday night.
This is not the only night of music for the first-timers. Keep your ears to the ground-or the Seegers hallways-for posters of their next performances. If luck is around, there may even be a demo CD by the end of the year.
Following the TV Babysitters was freshman Max Seidman '11 on guitar, who was not new to the Red Door.
He has been playing guitar for many years, but counts his real musical beginning from when he started writing music two years ago. The sound is influenced by mainly folk music and classic rock, such as Pink Floyd, Neil Young and Sufjan Stevens, along with many others.
Nick LaFalce '10 took the next slot on guitar as well. Random fact: Nick's band from home is playing at Lehigh's Battle of the Bands on Saturday-the winner is the opener for the mainstream band, like our 311 or Ben Folds who played last year.
LaFalce has been playing the guitar since he was eight, with a mesh of self-teaching and lessons along the way that has brought him to where he is now.
He found his musical motivation by listening to the radio. "I heard the bad music on the radio and wanted to sound better." You can hear his band at myspace.com/thetakenj.
Closing for the night was "Dolphin Party", with Dustin Moore, Senior Associate Director of the Muhlenberg Fund Development & Alumni Relations Life Sports Center, playing lead guitar, Ty Hooker-Haring '09 on bass, and Colin Hooker-Haring '10 on drums.
