This past week the Women's Basketball Team played two tough road games against some of the best the Centennial Conference had to offer. With a chance to cement themselves into second place on their run towards the top, the team took to the challenge and won both road games. Defense was the key to the Mules' success.
On Wed. the Mules used a mixture of zone and man defense to stop almost everything the Ursinus Bears had to offer on offense. The Mules held Ursinus to 49 points as well as their leading scorer to a quiet 7 points. The Mules were led by freshman Kelly McKeon with 18 points, including 4 straight three-pointers in the second half to stop a Mule draught. They also received double figures from sophomores Lauren Boyl and Erin McSherry, who came up with her first career double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Junior Kaitlin Strumph has seen her minutes go up recently and took advantage of this by dishing out a team-high 7 assists. The win propelled the Mules into second place.
Last year Mules had real trouble against the McDaniel Green Terror. This year however, the Mules have done really well against the team from Western Maryland, evidenced by their win on Sat. The victory was a little different than many of the other wins the Mules have posted this year, in that they have typically been led by guards Boyle and McKeon. However, this time it was the post players leading the offense. McSherry led all Mules with 14 points. Also tallying double digits were sophomore Alexis Bates with 12 and freshman Sheila Cook with 10. Cook completed her third career double-double by grabbing 10 rebounds. sophomore Kaitlyn O'Malley reached double figures by contributing 11 points. McKeon was not completely absent from the stat sheet as she led the Mules with 6 assists in the Mules' 69-51 win.
This win was huge for the Mules, who had just moved into second place in the Conference. The Mules are 10-3 in Conference play, just a half game behind the 10-2 Dickinson Red Devils. The two teams meet here on Wed., Feb. 20. That game could determine the winner of the Conference, provided that both teams win out their remaining games. This year's team has had its rough spots, but they seems to be finding their stride on both the offensive and defensive ends at just the right time.
