The Student Council, now recognized as the Student Government, came together on Tues., Feb. 12 to discuss last semester's accomplishments and this semester's new business.
Some of the Student Government's accomplishments from last semester include: Brought Graduation Pledge Alliance Program to campus, conducted Student Athlete Auction for "Dance for a Cure", conducted multiple meetings of the Student Body Association, helped run and promote Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, extended working hours of General's Quarters on Thursday nights, established wireless Hotspots in dorms and academic buildings on campus, and allocated Student Activities Funds to student organizations for numerous programming activities.
This first meeting of the semester was intended to give students the opportunity to speak with Allentown City Council members but unfortunately due to the inclement weather, they were unable to attend.
The first order of business brought to attention was the changing of Student Council's name to Student Government. The reasons behind this change were to be on par with all other student government in both the Lehigh Valley area and the nation. Student Government also feels that this title deems them more respect from administration and faculty on campus as well as other schools and organizations off campus.
This change was followed by some announcements about upcoming campus events. Michelle Yost '08, Executive Secretary, informed the student body that the men and women's basketball teams will be hosting the "Think Pink" breast cancer research fundraiser this Sat., Feb. 16.
Adrian Shanker '09 spoke about the upcoming Pennsylvania Primary Elections on April 22. Shuttles have been arranged to transport students to voting locations. Shanker emphasized the importance of student participation in such an important election. Voter registration will begin tomorrow on campus for any students who have yet to register.
With the recent selection of an architect for the Seegers renovations, Scott Gordon '08, Student Body President, reminded students to attend the upcoming focus groups so that the Student Body can have their input on the new design.
The meeting was concluded with a reminder by Yost that there is a student leader brunch this Sun. Feb., 17 and all our welcome to attend. The next Student Body meeting will be held on Tues., March 18.
