Some exciting news came in for Muhlenberg Men's Basketball this week: they are ranked 24th in Division III for field-goal percentage, holding their opponents under 40 percent shooting in nine of their wins.
Other good news came for the Mules on Jan. 6 as they defeated Haverford, winning their sixth straight victory at home. This game was a fight between two of the best defensive teams in the league, and like most of the other games the Mules have played this season, they started out strong but ended up in a close nail-biting finish.
The Mules played the first half spectacularly, starting off on a 20-0 run and creating a 27-9 lead. The score had been tied 8-8, but after sophomore Obi Nwizugbo scored a free-throw, the lead went to the Mules and never left.
However, with three minutes left in the game, Haverford came back and closed the point margin to four at 60-56. A lot of leadership came from the juniors in this game as Darrell Roth and Mike Bernardini hit 10 free-throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
Bernardini scored 20 points while sophomore Pete Barnes had another career-high game totaling 15 points. Roth contributed another 13.
Some bad news came for the Mules at the end of the week when their nine home game winning streak was smashed by the Gettysburg Bullets.
The Bullets shot out in the second half with a 18-4 run, putting the Mules down by a deficit of four points which they could not recover from. The Mules tried to come back but in the last possessions could not come up with a three-pointer to tie. The Bullets hit the rest of their foul shots to come up with the victory.
For the fifth straight game Peter Barnes matched or set his career high in points, this game with 17, and also contributed three blocked shots.
The Mules were still able to hold Gettysburg to under 40 percent shooting; however, this loss dropped them into a tie for fourth place in the Centennial Conference with McDaniel.
