Tues., Feb. 19 was the Student Body debate. The three participating candidates included: Sara Keller '10, Adrian Shanker '09, and Xan Shapiro '09.

The debate began with three minute opening statements from each candidate. Shapiro, a political science and international relations major, is not seeking to revolutionize the system of Student Government but would like to improve upon the representation of the Student Body.

Keller, now in her second year as a Student Government member, is involved in a wide array of activities on campus. She assured the Student Body that because of her involvement in various activities, she would have the ability to better represent all types of students.

Shanker, a former Student Government member, believes that the system of Student Government needs to be changed. He wants to bring about more student involvement in Student Government issues. "I have the leadership and experience to make things happen on campus," said Shanker.

After these statements the candidates were then presented with three questions from current Student Body President, Scott Gordon '08. These questions were: "What do you think students at the College are looking for in their Student Body President? If elected Student Body President, what are the top three changes that you would like to make? Why do you feel you are better suited for this position than the other candidates?"

In response to these questions, Shanker focused on his previous experience with making changes on campus and consistently following through with his ideas for the College.

Shanker is the President of the Gay Straight Alliance and Vice President of the College Democrats. He has created strong relationships with the administration through his immediate efforts to make a change at the College, beginning in his sixth week of his Freshman year.

Keller heavily emphasized her involvement and leadership positions in numerous activities on campus. She explained that having this advantage will further her relationship with the administration, which would help to strengthen her progress toward making improvements on campus as Student Body President.
