On Fri., Apr. 11, Muhlenberg Baseball looked to sweep Swarthmore for the season, and did just that. With help from freshman Clint Lynch's first career home run, the Mules came out victorious with a score of 8-2. A good portion of those runs, however, came on Garnet mistakes.
Senior Joe Carlo and freshman Bobby Spindler each drove in runs with singles. Junior Edward Risener went 3-for-5 with two RBI singles, and junior John Kalis finished the day with three hits. Junior Eric Hammond pitched in three stolen bases. On the mound, freshman Kevin Witmier and senior Paul Faith combined in a strong pitching effort to lead the Mules to victory.
Sat., Apr. 15, the Mules took Gettysburg, twice. For the first matchup, sophomore Phil Cresta threw a complete-game shutout, and didn't tire himself in the process since he only needed 62 pitches.
As for the offense, the Mules chipped away a lead, one run at a time. Two of their four total runs came on suicide squeeze bunts by Hammond. Junior Christian Conti scored two runs as well, and junior John Kalis hit a single to mark his 100th career hit.
The second half of the doubleheader seemed to feature two brand new teams, as offense took center stage. The Mules had a six-run second inning to start the ball rolling, and they added to it with a four-run fifth. Once again, the Mules capitalized on their opponents' errors.
Risener had four RBIs, making his total for the season 43, but remains just behind Conti to take over the school record that used to be 41. But, Risener did tie the school record for sacrifice flies in a single season with six so far.
Junior pitcher Joseph Barrese earned the save for the Mules, capping off the doubleheader with another win. Hammond and sophomore Dan Fisher highlighted the offense, as Hammond went 3-for-5 and Fisher finished 3-for-4.
Coming up for Muhlenberg Baseball is a game Fri., Apr. 18 vs. Ursinus at 3:30 p.m., and a game against McDaniel at 12:30p.m. the following day.
