Struck dumb by the sun
Muhlenberg Weekly Executive Board
Issue date: 4/24/08 Section: Op/Ed
April is finally here. Go outside, tan, burn, sleep. But don't forget, you are still miles away from the finish line. We are thinking to ourselves, "Yes! Only a couple of weeks left!" Then the onslaught of work hits our brains, and we panic, "No! Only a couple of weeks left!"
Remember when summer vacation was, well, a vacation? Not so anymore. Our lives up until now have been broken into two categories: summer, and every other season. But now, the real world awaits, and internship application deadlines creep up like that final paper that's due tomorrow (you can thank us later for reminding you). When did summer become a time to work?
Summer is quickly becoming a time to show your stuff you learned in class and extra activities, like oh, we don't know, The Weekly perhaps. Looking for journalism internship, we're reminded of why we sit in a cluttered office every Tuesday night for nine straight hours without pay. We may be called crazy now, but come June we'll have some experience to work with.
It's tough growing up. But it happens to all of us eventually. It is as inevitable as getting a sunburn when laying by Victor's Lament day in and day out. Going home isn't what it used to be. Relaxing by the pool, sleeping until noon, and jumping through the sprinklers are things of the past.
And we're only juniors! We can't imagine what seniors are feeling. Probably a sense of freedom, and probably a sense of terror. But now's the time to explore. Find out what you want to do with your life. Explore every opportunity, and seek out those internship. Don't forget that cheap or even free labor is always appreciated by employers. Go to the Career Center, and see what's out there.
Try not to stress out. We know it sounds impossible, but we are so close! No matter how silly you may feel, whip out that planner and map out your time. Don't give up those lovely sunny days though, just don't forget to pack a book with your picnic blanket and sunscreen.
